Christopher Harley began his interest in Martial Art at the age of 7, when he took Judo at summer camp. From there, he took classes in different Karate styles and some Aikido at various dojos, but nothing ever clicked. Most of his early experience came from learning whatever anyone would teach, usually in a back yard or garage setting. In college he took up Boxing, and revisited both Judo and Aikido. After graduating college in 1999, as part of a class at Tom Brown Jr.'s Tracking, Nature and Wilderness Survival School, Christopher was introduced to what he calls the "JKD Family" of arts (elaborated upon in greater detail in The Arts section), by some of Rick Faye and Guro Inosanto's Students. During that course he was introduced to Bujinkan by Joe Lau, one of Jack Hoban and Hatsumei Sensei's students. Since then, he has pursued studies through seminars lasting between two days and two weeks (a week being the average), around the country, practicing on his own, and ultimately at the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts in Los Angeles, CA. Christopher trained at the Inosanto Academy with Guro Dan Inosanto and Sifu Larry Hartsell (among others) between 2004 and 2008; averaging over 20 hours a week of training.
Before his death in 2007, Sifu Larry Hartsell awarded Christopher Full Instructor Certification in the Art and Science of Jun Fan Gung Fu. Over the years since his first exposure in '99, Christopher continued to study with Rick Faye's students, as well as Rick himself. Christopher received his Phase One Certification under Rick Faye from George Larson in 2003, and his second Instructor Certification (MKG Instructor Candidate) from Sifu Rick Faye in 2008. In 2008, Christopher returned to his home town of Oakland, still traveling to Los Angeles (and other parts of the globe) for training as often as possible. Christopher received his third and fourth Instructor Certifications in April of 2009 from Guro Dan Inosanto; an Apprentice Instructor Certification in Jun Fan Gung Fu, and an Apprentice Instructor Certification (Lakan Guro Level I) in the Filipino Martial Arts. In 2009, Christopher Harley Founded the Bay Area Kali Group.
